In 2017-18 the central estate reduced in size by 2% and is now 7.7 million sq m and central estate operating costs reduced by £22 million, in real terms. At the same time, vacant space across the government estate is just 1.4%, compared to 7.1% in the private sector. The estate continued to contribute to sustainability targets set by the Government, showing a 39% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 55% reduction in paper use and a 40% reduction in waste since 2009-10.
