The £5.5 billion Digital Backbone investment set out in the Defence Investment Plan provides Defence with its common and reusable digital infrastructure, systems and services. It enables secure communications, data exchange, and digital services, including cloud platforms, secure networks, data centres, enterprise and military applications, and cyber defence capabilities. This Digital Backbone is essential to modern warfighting, underpinning decision-making, operational agility, and integration across government and internationally with allies.
As stated in the Defence Investment Plan, investment in the Digital Backbone will replace fragmented services and networks with an enterprise platform that accelerates decision-making, enables integration across domains and supports operational advantage in a data-driven battlespace.
The £420 million referenced in paragraph 25 comprises of a number of targeted investments within the broader Digital Backbone programme which are time critical and will allow the evolution of the digital enterprise to counter adversarial threats.
The package of measures (four in total) are focused on DBB resilience (cyber, crypto and gateways) in the face of evolving threats. We cannot go in to specific capability detail within the response to this Question,otherwise we risk compromise.
