The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) safely connects information across different National Health Service systems, in a single safe, secure environment. This allows staff to analyse data to improve the co-ordination of patient care, delivering benefits such as making more effective use of operating theatres, giving people a quicker diagnosis of cancer, or speeding up the discharge of people from hospital.

The NHS FDP contract includes robust provisions to manage supplier performance and protect the interests of patients and the NHS.
The contract is based on the Government Legal Department’s Model Services Contract and contains standard terms including the right to suspend or terminate services where there is a breach of contractual obligations, which includes non-compliance with national laws which incorporate national security and data protection legislation.
The contract, in line with standard Government contracting terms, sets out the rights, processes, and terms under which termination can be exercised by NHS England, including termination for convenience.
More broadly, the contract operates within a robust legal and governance framework, including strict requirements relating to data protection, confidentiality, and the lawful basis of data processing. Access to data is controlled by NHS England, and the supplier processes data only under the instruction of the NHS. In the event of termination, NHS organisations retain control over their data.
These contractual and governance controls ensure that NHS England can take appropriate action, including suspension or termination, where necessary to address issues relating to compliance with legal, data governance, or other operational requirements.
