The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) safely connects information across the National Health Service into a single, secure environment to allow staff to better co-ordinate care, through managing theatre time better, improving the speed of a cancer diagnosis, or allowing patients to be discharged quicker from hospital.
To date, 24 integrated care board clusters and 168 NHS trusts have signed up to the NHS FDP, including the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. NHS England publishes quarterly information on the benefits realised from the NHS FDP at the following link:
The decision of patients to exercise either Type 1 or National Data Opt-Outs within the NHS does not affect their individual care as both opt-outs relate to secondary uses that support health and care, such as planning and research.
The National Data Opt-Out does not currently apply to products used in the NHS FDP. In most cases, this is because data is being used for the purpose of direct care. If the purpose of processing means that the National Data Opt-Out should apply, then the data controller must apply the opt-out.
